Latest exhibition at Kirkby Gallery – From Kirkby with Love

by Laura Johnston

Liverpool-based artist and sculptor, Phillip Garrett, explores the many faces of Knowsley through drawing and sculpture in his new exhibition at Kirkby Gallery.

Phillip gained his inspiration from the wonderful faces of local people and places over the last few months. His choice of subjects to study were influenced by suggestions from the public, as well as local figures from history worth celebrating.

Phillip uses a traditional approach, with the work expressing today’s creative concerns and social struggles. Working directly from life and social observation, the artwork uses portraiture and landscape to tell our community’s stories.

As part of his journey and research across Knowsley, Phillip has worked with schools to explore subjects to work on as well as to teach drawing and sculpture to our next generation of artists. A selection of this work will feature in the show, offering local pupils the opportunity to exhibit alongside a professional for the first time.

Unique to this exhibition, Phillip has fostered new creative twinnings between Knowsley and other regional art venues, producing commissioned work to remember a local figure that has had a strong, positive impact on their local community. By celebrating local communities and fostering new partnerships, it demonstrates how our exhibition and actions come from ‘Kirkby with Love’.

Phillip will continue his work throughout February and March meaning this is an almost entirely new body of work, presented very much as a working studio exhibition within Kirkby Gallery. He will be around on some of the days the exhibition is on – you can contact the gallery for more information.

Gary McGillivray: Deconstruction

Accompanying From Kirkby with Love is an exhibition in the entrance gallery by local artist Gary McGillivray.

Deconstruction is Gary’s most recent body of work which sees a new dynamic approach to expression.
Gary said: “My work prior did not feel expressive enough anymore and I wanted to see more of ‘myself’ in the artwork. I needed to lose the fear of making mistakes and wanted to take changes with the paint and my markmaking.”

Interest and inspiration for the artwork came from a number of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Sam Walsh.

The artwork in ‘Deconstruction’ is unique in that Gary decided not to use his painting style he previously went with and now says “The beauty of what I create is that I am never quite sure how they will look in the end.”

You can visit both exhibitions at Kirkby Gallery from 3 February 2020
