Partnering for a Greener Future: Knowsley and Roberts Recycling engage students in Green Careers Week
During Green Careers Week recently, Knowsley’s Recycling Engagement Team, alongside Roberts Recycling Ltd, staged interactive sustainability workshops at Northwood Community Primary School in Kirkby. 
Hundreds of enthusiastic students joined the fun – showing a real interest in recycling and environmental responsibility—giving us hope that many of these young people will pursue green careers in the future.
The team also visited the HQ of Roberts Recycling to learn more about textiles recycling. They witnessed the journey of unwanted clothes and fabrics collected in Knowsley—from sorting and grading to reusing and recycling—and how these processes help build a circular economy.
These initiatives highlight Knowsley’s commitment to sustainability: supporting education for the next generation while strengthening partnerships that make a real difference in reducing waste.
Green Libraries Week
To mark Green Libraries Week and make the most of the half-term break, Knowsley Council’s Recycling Engagement Team delivered a series of engaging, recycling-themed activities across local libraries. Three unique events were held to encourage children and families to learn about recycling and sustainability in fun and creative ways.
- Decorate your own reusable bag – Prescot Library
This well-attended creative session (pictured) gave children the chance to design their own Halloween-themed trick-or-treat bags, promoting the idea of reuse over single-use plastics. The team were amazed by all the fantastic designs and creativity on display—thank you to all the children who took part and made the event so special!
- Mobile Recycling Centre pop-up – Huyton library
Residents were invited to bring along vapes, batteries, textiles, and small electrical items for recycling at the Mobile Recycling Centre stall. The team engaged visitors in conversations about responsible disposal and explained how these items are processed once collected. The event helped raise awareness of the importance of recycling everyday items that often end up in general waste.
- Litter picking game- Kirkby Library
Children and adults took part in a hands-on litter-picking challenge, learning to sort waste correctly and discovering which items can and can’t be recycled.
It was fantastic to see children engaging with the topic of recycling, and even the grown-ups walked away having learned something new!
Macmillan Coffee Morning – Crawford Gardens
Following a successful Residents’ Group talk earlier this month, the Recycling Engagement Team were warmly invited back to Crawford Gardens—this time for a cause close to many hearts: the Macmillan Coffee Morning.
The event, held in the communal lounge, brought together residents, staff, and guests to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support while enjoying homemade cakes, hot drinks, and friendly conversation. An impressive £564 was raised on the day, thanks to the generosity of all who attended.
The team were delighted to return and continue building relationships with the community, offering recycling advice and chatting informally with residents about waste reduction and local services.
