Two five-a-side football teams from Knowsley took part in the Regional Care Leavers Football Tournament which took place today LCFA in Liverpool.
The Knowsley team was competing against teams from six other local authorities in the region.
Congratulations to the team as Knowsley were crowned the winners!
The council is the corporate parent to over 600 cared for children or care experienced young people and like any child, it wants the best for children and young people in the borough.
The council’s Care Experienced People team supported the players and sourced a pitch for practice sessions, as well as provided training and coaching sessions, along with volunteers from the council’s Shield and Policy and Performance teams, and also the support of local business Artisan Joinery, who funded football kits for the players.
As well as showcasing their footballing skills, one of the care experienced young people volunteered their time to DJ at the event whilst a member of staff from the council’s Early Help and Prevention team was the photographer for the tournament.
With the World Cup 2026 in full swing, each local authority brought along food which was themed to the different countries taking part. Knowsley’s cuisine consisted of French and Moroccan delights.
Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said “Fantastic news! Congratulations – you truly deserved to win the tournament and bring the trophy back to Knowsley. Thank you also to local company Artisan Joinery for their support.”
The team will continue to develop their footballing skills with regular training and will also join a wider Care Experienced People tournament team.
