Knowsley’s Archive retains top rating

by Sandra Issar

Knowsley Archives Service has retained its Accreditation award, the highest possible rating, following a review by the national body for archives.

The service has retained the Accreditation award gained in 2017 following a review by the Panel of the UK Archive Service Accreditation Committee and The National Archives.

The Archive Service Accreditation Panel noted that they “…were impressed by progress achieved by the archive service since Accreditation. In particular the advances in digital preservation achieved during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and the developments to the engagement and outreach offer.”

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Retaining accredited status demonstrates that Knowsley Archives Service continues to meet clearly defined national standards relating to collections management and resourcing, the care of the unique collections held and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Accredited Archive Services ensure the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage The status also demonstrates the Archive is meeting and maintaining standards as an approved Place of Deposit for public records.

Knowsley Archives Service

Knowsley Archives Service collects, preserves and organises historic documents, photographs, maps and other archival materials relating specifically to the people and places of Knowsley.

From its base in The ARK, the Archive is creating a collective memory for the borough that is accessible for research and consultation, either physically or online through digital content and finding aids. It’s an amazing place housing thousands of documents, volumes, photographs, maps and much more.

Cllr Jayne Aston, Cabinet Member for Resources, said:

“Knowsley has a rich and fascinating heritage, which we will be reflecting on and celebrating next year when we are Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture.

“Preserving our history is vitally important and our archive service gives our residents the opportunity to explore and develop their connection to the borough – ultimately creating a sense of pride in the place they live.

“We’re delighted Knowsley’s Archive Service has retained its Accreditation from the National Archives, it’s a testament to the quality service and curation of the collection.”
