Knowsley Youth Justice Service – putting children first

by Gemma Melling

From 1 July 2024, the Knowsley Youth Offending Service is called Knowsley Youth Justice Service.

This better reflects the work of the service, supporting children in a child-focussed way and removes the ‘label’ of offender which can have a detrimental impact on their wellbeing and outcomes.

Extensive consultation has been carried out with staff, partners, children and young people, and a Speech and Language Therapist to ensure the name and logo is suitable for children with additional needs, as well as endorsement from the Knowsley Youth Justice Management Board.

What does Knowsley Youth Justice Service do?

Children can become involved in offending for many different reasons. This could include emotional and mental health needs, learning and behavioural difficulties, suffering trauma, substance misuse and educational disadvantage.

The Knowsley Youth Justice Service aims to address the causes swiftly to help children move away from offending and contribute positively to their communities.

The service works together with the Police, Probation Service, Education and Health services to reduce the number of children committing crimes, entering custody and / or re-offending.

The service listens to children, support them through important changes in their lives as well as supporting them to do well in education, training and employment and live happy and healthy lives.

To support this work, the Council has allocated £650,000 in a targeted team – STEP (Support, Together, Empower, Prevent) –  who work with children to prevent them from committing crimes and to improve their life chances.

Cllr David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “It’s through listening to our children and young people that we have changed the name of the service – to better reflect their needs and the support that we provide to them. A key priority is to keep children safe and part of this is to ensure that our children and young people don’t commit crime, but if they do, ensure there is the support their to help them to turn their lives around. This support is provided through our newly branded Knowsley Youth Justice Service.”
