A young person with autism says she’s “excited about what the future holds” after securing a full-time job with the support of the Knowsley Works ENABLE team.
Twenty-three-year-old Samantha Jones was offered the role at Applied Nutrition in Kirkby Industrial Estate at the end of last year.
Samantha was put in touch with the ENABLE team by a Disability Employment Advisor at Kirkby Job Centre Plus in January 2020.
The ENABLE team mentor people with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism, helping them to develop employability skills, access training, job search and find work placements, to secure employment.
With her ENABLE Mentor Maria Hart, she explored the type of job she would like to pursue. Samantha had watched a TV programme on working in a warehouse and liked the idea of repetitive work. Maria found a Warehousing & Storage Level 2 course with training provider VSS in Liverpool, which Samantha excelled at from day one! She went on to gain a Forklift Truck Licence and Counterbalance Licence.
Her Tutor, Ged Smith, said: “She was a fantastic student, the best in the class of 20.”
Samantha’s next step was to gain some work experience. Within a week at Applied Nutrition, a leading sports nutrition company, Samantha was offered a full-time role!
Administrative Manager, Fernanda Prado, said: “We were happy to help. We like to give chances to local people who are determined to succeed.”
Samantha’s Mentor Maria Hart, said: “This is a real success. We are proud to work with our partners across Liverpool City region to remove the barriers people with disabilities can face in progressing into jobs.”
Samantha’s mum Hilary, added: “Samantha was so excited when she told me the news, but she wouldn’t have been so confident and sure of herself without the amazing input from Maria and ENABLE. Thank you so much for all your help and kindness.”
