Knowsley, Say Hello to Summer

by Alison Cornmell

Summer is here and, although COVID-19 restrictions are still in place until 19 July, there is still a host of events taking place here in Knowsley, across all our town centres and at locations throughout the wider borough with something for everyone to enjoy safely.

Following the disruptions of last year, the 2021 programme of summer events is highly anticipated, as the borough prepares to become Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture in 2022.

Events include:

  • Makers and Players Trail – an opportunity for local people and businesses to showcase their creative talents, curated by Imaginarium Theatre – taking place in early July
  • As You Like It – Imaginarium Theatre’s outdoor performance of one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies with multiple dates and locations across the borough, including Prescot Woodland Theatre and Halewood Triangle Park.
  • Shakespeare Festival – An outdoor festival and celebration of the bard, hosted by Prescot’s Imaginarium Theatre – Friday 16 to Sunday 18 July
  • Town centre summer spectacular – free, fun, family friendly events will be taking place every Saturday throughout the school holidays (24 July to 28 August 2021) in Huyton Village Centre, Prescot Town Centre and Kirkby Town Centre. There’ll be superheroes, dinosaurs, carnival days, circus, urban beach and much more to look forward to!

Plans are being finalised for even more events and activities throughout the summer months so keep an eye out on Knowsley News and across our social media channels for updates.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member of Communities and Neighbourhoods, said:

“Following the disruption caused by the pandemic last year we’re all really looking to an exciting summer of COVID-19 safe events in Knowsley. There really will be something for everyone to enjoy and wherever you live in the borough, there will be something going on close to you that you can enjoy, safely.

“With developments such as the Shakespeare North Playhouse getting ever closer to completion it’s a really important time for Knowsley, culturally. Hopefully our programme of summer events will give everyone a taste of what’s to come when we become Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture in 2022!”

COVID testing

Everyone looking to attend the events is encouraged to take a COVID-19 test in advance. People without symptoms can get a rapid lateral flow test by ordering one online, picking one up from your local chemist or visiting a local testing site. There are a number of test sites in Knowsley you can attend. For more information about rapid lateral flow tests visit the NHS website.

If you have developed symptoms of COVID-19 you are advised not to attend the events. People with symptoms should self-isolate and arrange for a test.
