Knowsley Council is gearing up to launch a brand-new food recycling service to reduce the amount of food going to waste.
Not only is this initiative better for the planet, but it’s also helped to create lots of new ‘green’ job opportunities within the local community.
With more than 72,000 households benefitting from the exciting new greener scheme, Knowsley Council needed to expand its workforce and has undertaken one of the biggest recruitment drives to employ more than 30 new additional staff.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Graham Morgan said: “The launch of food recycling across Knowsley offers so many benefits – it’s a huge step forward in helping us to achieve our ambition of a cleaner greener Knowsley.”
“It’s also great that it’s unlocked opportunities for the community with lots of local people joining the team, and I hope they will be with us for many years to come.
“With more than 72,000 households set to benefit, this investment in our community and the environment is something we’re very proud of.”
Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to welcome even more local employees.
“Our waste teams have huge community support behind them, so I really hope that Knowsley residents will get on board with this new way of disposing food when we introduce it in the spring.”
Kevin Fargher, who is local to Knowsley and one of the newest members of the waste team said about his experience so far: “It has been a wonderful couple of weeks working at the council, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. I am enjoying the exercise from working outdoors and the chance to meet members of the public.”
