An ambitious programme aimed at protecting and enhancing the borough’s parks and green spaces has been approved by the council’s Cabinet.
Knowsley Council’s Green Space Action Plan (2024-2030) builds on the Council’s successful track record of investing in and improving these vital community assets.
Since 2010, the Council has successfully delivered two Green Space Strategies to improve the offer at the Borough’s 161 green spaces. This work has attracted millions of pounds of investment in Knowsley and secured 20 Green Flag awards.
Significant achievements in recent years include installing new play areas, creating new community sporting facilities and accessible walking and cycling routes, securing 20 Green Flag Awards, delivering an annual programme of freely accessible community events and activities, and supporting the establishment of 46 ‘Friends of’ parks and green spaces groups.
Key highlights of the action plan
The Green Space Action Plan recognises that green spaces play a key role in making Knowsley an attractive place to live, work and visit. They are also crucial in promoting mental and physical wellbeing, providing recreational areas, improving air quality, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
The plan outlines upcoming projects including a Biodiversity and Drainage Improvement Project at Halewood Park, woodland improvement at Oak Plantation in Huyton, a Sports Improvement Project at King George V Playing Fields in Prescot, and delivery of the Phase 3 of the Borough-wide Play Renewal Programme.
In addition to delivering improvement works, the Council will continue to engage with local residents to gather feedback and ensure the plan aligns with community priorities. This includes seeking residents’ views on a new Masterplan for Stadt Moers Park in Whiston, and the Masterplan delivery at Old Rough Park in Kirkby.
Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for communities and Neighbourhoods, Cllr Shelley Powell said: “Our green spaces are invaluable assets that make a huge contribution to the quality of life in Knowsley. This Action Plan outlines our commitment to preserving and enhancing these spaces for future generations. By working closely with communities and investing in sustainable practices, we aim to create vibrant and welcoming green spaces that benefit everyone.”
