Knowsley Council ensure dangerous fireworks are removed from sale

by Alison Cornmell

Last week many residents were looking forward to Bonfire Night, but not many will know Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards Team were working hard behind the scenes to ensure only safe fireworks were being sold.

Council officers conducted proactive, enforcement visits to businesses across the borough in the days and weeks leading up to Bonfire Night to check for fireworks that did not comply with safety regulations or were unregulated counterfeit products that would not have been through any of the essential safety tests.

These visits resulted in a number of dangerous fireworks being removed from sale. Including sparklers and throwdown fireworks. The Trading Standards Team worked alongside businesses and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to take these items off shelves and dispose of them.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said:

“In the lead up to the Halloween and Bonfire Period, Council officers work tirelessly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents. By collaborating with businesses and our partners we are proactively tackling the illegal sale of fireworks and protecting our communities.”

Group Manager Paul Kay, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Thanks to the investigative skills of Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards team we have successfully removed dangerous fireworks from shelves. It is by working with our partners that we can ensure the safety of our communities.”

Knowsley Council remind residents that you must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for:

  • Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight
  • New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am

If you suspect someone of selling illegal fireworks, especially in the run up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve please contact Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
