Knowsley celebrates the best ‘Good Level of Development’ results

Knowsley Council has achieved the highest local authority increase in Good Level of Development (GLD) results of all 24 North West Local Authorities and the third largest increase for Free School Meal pupils.

GLD is a key measure in the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for assessing if children are ready for Year 1 by the end of Reception, focusing on achieving expected levels in key prime areas (such as Communication) and specific areas (such as Literacy and Maths). It signifies a strong foundation for future learning.

Fundamental to this success has been the Priority Area programme and a focus on speech, language and communication.

This programme included the established of an Education Improvement Priority Area Board, chaired by Stephanie Brivio (an Independent Chair) with representatives from local schools, academy trusts and Knowsley Council and challenges (such as low attainment) were addressed with a focus on investment, resources and interventions. Through the programme, the desired outcomes includes boosting literacy, numeracy and overall outcomes for children and this year, there has been a 29% increase in children reaching age-related communication and language skills.

Cllr David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said “This is a fantastic achievement and clearly demonstrates what can be achieved through a shared vision and the council and local schools and Academy Trusts working in partnership. A key priority for us to ensure our children get the very best start in life, particularly on their education journey, and this programme is clearly having a positive impact for our children and ensuring they are ready to progress their learning and development when they leave Reception.”

Stephanie Brivio, Chair of the Education Improvement Priority Area Board, added “Throughout the duration of the programme, its strength lay in the Board’s vision and the collaborative approach adopted by the local authority, Academy Trusts and schools. It was great to be involved and I’m delighted with the outcomes we have achieved.”
