Special events providing mums with expert advice on breastfeeding are taking place in Knowsley during Breastfeeding Celebration Week (17 to 22 June).
The benefits of skin-to-skin contact are being highlighted as part of the week. Skin-to-skin time can provide a lovely bonding experience for mother and baby and it’s also a great time for baby to have their first breastfeed.
Breastfeeding brings many health benefits for both mother and baby. It boosts baby’s ability to fight illness and infection, and lowers a mother’s risk of breast cancer and may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer plus it burns around 500 calories a day.

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said:
“It’s really important mums-to-be and new mums have the right information and facts about breastfeeding as there are many benefits for both mother and baby. Breastfeeding Celebration Week provides a great opportunity to arrange special events and importantly raise awareness of the support that is available for mums-to-be and new mums all year round.
“Breastfeeding is a skill that takes time to get the hang of and we want to make sure that all mums in Knowsley who choose to breastfeed are able to access the support available to help them successfully breastfeed.”
Knowsley Bosom Buddies
Bosom Buddies is a friendly team of health professionals and local mums who have breastfed their own babies and want to help other mums do the same. The team supports pregnant women and new mums through the first eight weeks to help mums breastfeed if they choose to do so.
The team will visit mums at home within 48 hours of leaving hospital with their new baby, or within 24 hours of a home birth, and continue to provide up to eight weeks of support.
