Kirkby Regeneration and Investment Plan – next steps

by Jonathan Kearney

Following approval of the Kirkby Regeneration and Investment Plan last month, work is now underway by the Kirkby Neighbourhood Board to deliver the plan.

Informed by local feedback, the Kirkby Regeneration and Investment Plan includes a vision for Kirkby in 2036, which will focus on 3 key outcomes:-

  • A vibrant town centre: a welcoming destination with a diverse offer and high-quality facilities.
  • Safe, stronger neighbourhoods: secure places and community spaces that sustain activity and strengthen local life.
  • Empowering people to succeed: creating pathways and opportunities for those in need.

As part of the plan, funding in the first year from April 2026 will focus on:-

  • Public realm improvements with improved signage, access and connection between the town centre retail development and St Chad’s Parade.
  • The launch of the Kirkby Community Fund – community groups and organisations will be able to bid for grants that will deliver meaningful support to local residents and for investment in community assets. Applications will be invited for this fund over the summer – keep a look-out on Knowsley News and the Kirkby Neighbourhood Board over the coming months as further details will be shared about how to apply.
  • Develop and deliver an engaging programme of community and cultural events in the town centre and neighbourhood venues.
  • Providing recruitment and training support as part of the new retail expansion for local residents who have faced barriers to employment.

Max Steinberg CBE DL, Chair of Kirkby Neighbourhood Board, said: “Now that our plan has been approved, the Kirkby Neighbourhood Board is committed to delivering key outcomes for Kirkby residents that are aligned to their priority issues.

“The funding is being released in phases and our delivery activities will be aligned to these allocations.

“The first phase of funding will be used this year and will deliver improvements around public realm, develop and deliver an engaging events programme, provide employment support and job opportunities as well as the launch of a new Kirkby Community Fund that will enable local community groups and organisations to secure funding to deliver key projects and initiatives in their community as well as invest in community assets. Local people know their communities best and what is needed and it’s great the Board can support them to deliver key initiatives and support when and where it is needed.

“I look forward to seeing the plan now progress over the coming months and years and see the positive impact it has for everyone who lives, works or visits Kirkby.”

Regular updates will be provided as the plan progresses on the Kirkby Neighbourhood Board website.
