Kirkby Market Trader of the Month: June

by Gemma Melling

Every month, we’re profiling one of the traders at Kirkby Market, finding out more about their businesses and the faces you’ll see behind the stalls.

Introducing our Trader of the Month for June:

Trader of the Month June Kirsty Blundell

About your business:

“Our family has traded at Kirkby Market since 1978 – initially trading on Tuesdays and Saturdays before increasing to three days in the late 1990s. Next year we celebrate our 40th year trading at Kirkby Market.

“The business is a traditional family run business, established by my mother and father and recently passed down to me earlier this year.

“We currently trade every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday on Kirkby Market from stalls 34, 35 and 46.”

How did you start?

“I first started at Kirkby Market when I was seven years old. I’ve grown up working at Kirkby Market. After taking some time away to start a family I returned to the Market in 2010 – running the Olive stall at the old Kirkby Market. Our business is family through and through and I always intended to return one day.

“In 2017 my mother and father, Elaine and Ian, retired and passed the business down to me.

“This is a very exciting time for our family and my father is proud that I can continue in the business that he and my mother created.

“I currently have two members of staff and my mother and father help when they can. They’re market traders through and through so it’s difficult for them to stay away! During school holidays my daughter helps on the stall also – my intention is for her to be the business owner one day.”

Tell us about your offers:

“We specialise in selling a wide range of produce at competitive prices. We sell the biggest range of potatoes in Kirkby town centre and can make fruit baskets to order – which are particularly popular. We have a wide range of herbs and eggs also. I’d encourage everyone reading this to come and visit our stall!”
