Many of us will have set ourselves a challenge to become healthier and feel better in 2026. Whether you’re aiming to drink less, get more active, quit smoking, lose weight or sleep better there are a wide range of free tools and expert support available to help you feel your best.
Setting small, achievable goals is often the most effective way to create positive change. While new habits can be challenging to maintain, it’s important not to let any setback discourage you. Remember that everyone is different. Progress may take longer or feel more difficult for you but avoid comparing your progress with others.
Get active
Being active does more than just improve physical health; it boosts your energy, helps manage stress, and lifts your mood. You don’t need a gym to make a change—start with small, manageable steps. This could be a 10-minute daily walk, a bit of winter gardening, or simply choosing a parking spot further from the entrance. The key is to do what you can, at your own pace. Every bit of movement counts toward a healthier you

Lose weight
Small, simple changes to what and how much you are eating and drinking can help you to lose weight. There’s lots of ideas on the NHS Better Health website and on eating healthier when trying to lose weight.
If you live in Knowsley or are registered with a Knowsley GP and think you would benefit from some support and advice to help you lose weight, call the Healthy Knowsley Service on 0800 0731 202. Or if you would prefer someone to contact you, simply complete the referral form.
Drink less
Stopping or drinking less alcohol can make a big difference to your health. It can boost your energy, help you lose weight, and save you money.
As most alcoholic drinks are high in calories, cutting down on the amount you drink can also help you to lose weight. A standard glass of wine contains approximately 158 calories!
If you’re unsure how much alcohol you are drinking, you can use the NHS Drink Free Days app.
With the app you can receive reminders when you need it most and celebrate milestones when you reach your targets.
You can find out more and download the app on the NHS website.
Quit for good
Stopping smoking is one of the best things smokers can do for their health, and with the right support you’re up to four times as likely to quit for good.
You can get support at www.smokefreeknowsley.org.uk, call the Knowsley Stop Smoking Service on 0151 426 7462 or text quit to 61825 (normal network charge).
Try something new
Trying new experiences—no matter how small—can make your daily routine feel more lively and interesting. Why not switch up your usual habits? You could try a different walking route, or rediscover the joy of reading by visiting one of our five local libraries to borrow books for free. We also know that giving back is a fantastic way to boost your own wellbeing. If you’d like to build new connections and find a sense of purpose, explore the volunteering roles and community groups listed on the Knowsley Offer.
Sleep better
Good quality sleep is important for physical and mental health. It helps us to feel energised and rested, improving our ability to cope better with daily challenges and ups and downs. Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep a night, though individual needs vary (and often lessen slightly with age).
While the occasional sleepless night is harmless, persistent sleep issues – like difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, or not waking up feeling refreshed – can start to have a negative impact on health. Poor sleep can cause low mood, irritability, difficulty concentrating and reduced ability to do daily tasks.
Sleep problems are often triggered by worry, anxiety or underlying physical health issues. If sleep difficulties persist, it is important to seek help from your GP.
