A new FREE weekly event to encourage children and young people get active and have fun has got off to a great start in Kirkby.
The Millbrook Millennium Green junior parkrun is now up and running after a couple of ‘test’ sessions which has seen more than 50 young people take part across the two weeks.
The event, which is absolutely free to enter, will take place every Sunday at 9am around a 2km course at Millbrook Millenium Green on Kirkby Row. Everyone is welcome to participate but you must be between the ages 4 to 14 to receive a time and participating children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
There is no need to sign up for the event – children can just turn up on the day and run or walk. Just be sure to register with parkrun in advance and bring your barcode (printed out or on a phone) to be scanned when you cross the finish line so you can receive your result!
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities & Neighbourhoods commented: “I am thrilled that we have been able to secure another junior parkrun event for Knowsley. I have attended the Halewood event on several occasions and always loved it, so its great news that residents in the north of the borough will also be able to take part in an event local to them.
It’s such a fun family activity but also a really great way to get kids active – improving health and wellbeing and with plenty of smiles along the way.”
Vicky Unsworth, Millbrook Millenium Green Junior Parkrun Event Director added: “As someone who has grown up in Kirkby, I know how important it is for kids around here to have as many opportunities as possible. Parkrun is such a supportive and inspiring environment, and I have seen how much my own kids love being involved in it. I am proud to lead a team of amazing volunteers to deliver this opportunity for kids in Kirkby to get active and get into running. I can’t wait to see as many as possible at Milly on a Sunday morning.”
The Millbrook Millennium Green junior park run is the latest parkrun event taking place in Knowsley with popular and well-established events already happening including the 5km Knowsley Parkrun at Stadt Moers Park every Saturday and junior parkrun at Halewood Park on Sundays.
