Jubilee Park group is making a difference

by Cathy Sheel

A new volunteer group supporting the community around Jubilee Park in Huyton is one of the finalists in BBC Radio Merseyside’s Make a Difference Awards.

Jubilee Park Craftivists meet every Friday at the park pavilion from 10am to 12pm and organise a range of activities for the local community including craft sessions, fun days and growing events.

They’ve now heard the group is one of four finalists in the Green Award category of BBC Radio Merseyside’s Make a Difference Awards which recognises individuals or groups who help to make where we live more environmentally friendly and better for nature.

The group has gone from strength to strength in recent months since local community activist Christine Keen galvanised support for her regular litter picks at the park.

With support from the council’s Green Spaces team the group has grown in numbers and established a regular programme of events – everything from crafting skills to nature trails and even a community fun day.

They even produced crotched rainbows for the Rainbow Trail Walk between Jubilee Park and Court Hey Park as part of the recent Knowsley Pride Event. Future plans include the creation of a sensory garden at the park.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “Jubilee Park Craftivists are a fabulous example of how a community can come together to make a difference in their local neighbourhood. Their nomination for this award is well deserved and I wish them success when the winners are announced!”

The winners of BBC Radio Merseyside’s Make a difference award will be announced in September.
