Improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation through volunteering in 2019

by Laura Johnston

National reading charity, Beanstalk, is urging people to consider becoming a reading helper in 2019, as they aim to support more than fifteen thousand children across the country to become confident readers.

The programme not only helps to transform the lives of children who struggle with reading, but can also positively change the lives of volunteers, significantly improving their wellbeing.

Beanstalk volunteers provide one-to-one support to children aged three to 13 in a variety of ways; transforming them into confident, passionate and able readers. But the children aren’t the only ones to benefit from this unique programme; according to the latest feedback from more than 1,200 Beanstalk volunteers, being a reading helper has helped them feel better connected to their local communities as well as improved their mental activity and overall wellbeing, with 93% saying they would recommend becoming a reading helper to others.

Ginny Lunn, Chief Executive Officer at Beanstalk said; “We know that volunteering can greatly enrich and improve people’s lives in a number of different ways. We see it all the way through the volunteer journey with Beanstalk from the training we provide through to placing reading helpers in early years and primary school settings and we are proud to be able to offer a truly life-changing experience for both reading helpers and the children they support”

Councillor Sean Donnelly, Cabinet member for Health and Social Care said; “Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Through Beanstalk, reading helpers have the opportunity to go ‘back to school’ and become a valued part of the school community. I would encourage anyone who has some time to spare to sign up as a volunteer and help to foster a love of reading in Knowsley’s children.
