Huyton Library consultation results

by Lisa Bennett

Over 200 people have shared their views on Huyton Library as part of an in-person and online consultation which ran from 17 August to 14 September 2026.

The feedback will inform the development of the new Huyton Hive building on Cavendish Walk.

Huyton Hive, located in the former B&M unit in the heart of the village centre, is being transformed into a vibrant, modern library on the ground floor with Knowsley Works (providing employment and training support to residents) and office space being created on the first floor.

The main themes from the consultation highlighted that:-

  • Library users like having a separate children’s area, hosting community groups, spaces to sit and read, natural light, the vibrant space, excellent library facilities, range of activities and excellent staff in the library.
  • The majority said that no improvements to the library offer is needed. A number highlighted more seating and desks for working, more books as well as a dedicated teenager offer include spaces, targeted books and activities.
  • The consultation also asked for suggestions for new activities. Again, the majority said that the library currently has an extensive offer so no further suggestions. A few suggestions included having an exhibition space, book groups, mosaics, history sessions, teen activities including visiting author events as well as revision sessions, and evening options.

Much of this feedback has already been incorporated into the new design, including engaging children’s spaces, additional new books, an exciting teenage area, improved quiet study and PC zones, but this latest feedback will inform the detailed internal spaces and offer that will be available from next spring.

Work has already commenced on Huyton Hive and you can take a look at the exciting progress being made to transform the building here.

The new facility will provide residents with a welcoming and accessible space for learning, accessing digital services and offering many events and activities.

The new library will include exciting spaces for children of all ages, and adults alike, as well as the exceptional support and services from your local library including a vast array of books, support to get you online, access to PCs, photocopying and printing.

Existing activities and groups will also move into this new space, as well as new events and initiatives also being delivered from the new space.

Cllr Jayne Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Resources, said “Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views on Huyton Library. The feedback we received about the offer, activities and staff was extremely positive which was great to hear.

“The feedback will now be used to finalise the offer at the new library and I look forward to sharing further updates as this project progresses.”

This project is being funded through the Brownfield Infrastructure Land Fund via Homes England.

The current library on Civic Way remains open as usual whilst these works are ongoing and once the work is complete, the Civic Way building will be used as office space to support the council’s wider development plans for Huyton. You can read more here.
