The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for residents across Knowsley. With many coping with job losses, being furloughed, home schooling, caring responsibilities, illnesses, bereavement to name just a few, support is needed more than ever during this incredibly challenging time.
Through the Winter Support Grant, 20 community and voluntary organisations from across the Borough will be supporting residents with access to food in their neighbourhoods. A total of £125,000 has been allocated to the groups to support residents.
The community and voluntary groups are out and about in their local community, supporting residents by running errands and just carrying out welfare checks to ensure residents are okay and have someone “looking out for them”. Importantly, the groups can identify families in need, without families having to ask for help.
Residents who have requested support through the Knowsley Support and Volunteer Line (0800 073 0043) will also receive food parcels through these community and volunteer groups.
Hundreds of food parcel will be delivered with many families across the Borough being supported with this latest funding boost.
Cllr Jayne Aston, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “It’s essential that our residents have the right support at the right time and I know that having food deliveries is a priority for many at the moment.
“Our volunteer and community groups know our communities better than anyone and importantly, they can identify residents in need who often won’t ask for support.
“As well as providing food parcels, we are also ensuring our residents know what other support is available so along with the food delivery, residents will also receive information about the other support that they can access including help in finding employment, home budgeting and debt advice along with support with heating issues and bills.
“Help really is only a phone call way so if you need help, please call our Volunteer and Support Line on 0800 073 0043.”
The Winter Support Grant has been allocated by the Government to local councils to support residents over the winter period. Knowsley Council has been allocated £0.741m which will be used to support residents with food parcels, heating and fuel costs.
