Whatever the weather over the summer holidays, parents know it can be a challenge to encourage children away from the TV, games console or other device.
This summer help is at hand as Public Health England, with support from Sport England, have once again teamed up with Disney to help children get active and keep moving throughout the holidays by playing 10 Minute Shake Up games.
This year the games are inspired by some of their favourite characters from Disney Frozen, Disney and Pixar Toy Story and, excitingly for the first time ever, Marvel!
The 10 Minute Shake Up campaign aims to inspire children to rebuild confidence in being active, develop new and longer-term physical skills and, most importantly, have fun!
Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Health said: “The 10 Minute Shake Ups are a brilliant way to help your kids get their recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity, through lots of short bursts of fun. It will also help them to build confidence while discovering with which characters they share skills or attributes.”
Why 10-minute bursts of activity?
Being active helps children to build social skills, boost self-confidence, academic outcomes, as well as improving children’s physical and mental wellbeing.
Children and young people should achieve a total of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, but many are not achieving this recommended target.
The 10 Minute Shake Ups break this hour down into manageable chunks for both children and adults, making it both achievable and fun.
How to join the fun
There are 16 fun, new Disney-themed games on the 10 Minute Shake Up website to add to the 100 plus games already available. The Disney sports quiz has also been updated and re-launched on the website to help parents find sports and activities their children might enjoy.
