An innovative history programme aiming to inspire, entertain and educate is coming to Knowsley Hall.
The programme includes two Study Days which brings to life 600 years of British history by telling fascinating stories of the Derby family and their ancestral home, Knowsley Hall. The Study Days are curated and hosted by The Countess of Derby, focusing on the family’s history, bringing together academics and writers.
On 15 October, the day will focus on the life and legacy of the 13th Earl of Derby who was a natural historian, and patron of the watercolourist and ‘Nonsense’ writer, Edward Lear. You will hear from speakers Caroline Derby, Dr Alan Crosby, Dr Clemency Fisher, Jenny Uglow, and Frank Cottrell Boyce.
On the day, you will have a tour of the house, be given an opportunity for a special viewing of Edward Lear’s work with curator Gareth Williams, and enjoy a buffet lunch.
On 16 October, you can attend a Study Day devoted to the two recently published travel journals edited by the Countess of Derby – A Grand Tour Journal 1820 – 1822: The Awakening of the Man and A North American Journal 1824 – 1825: The Making of a Prime Minister. Speakers in attendance this day will be Caroline Derby, Professor Andrew O’Shaughnessy, Dr. Geoffrey Hicks, Anne Somerset, and Dr. Jeanie Grant Moore.
Tickets for this day includes a tour of the house, an opportunity for a special viewing of the original travel journals of the 14th Earl of Derby with curator Gareth Williams, and a buffet lunch.
Tickets for each day costs £75 and there’s also the opportunity for an overnight stay at Knowsley Hall.
