Home Christmas and New Year in Knowsley Help with food and fuel over the festive period

Help with food and fuel over the festive period

by Cathy Sheel

There’s help available to households who may be struggling to buy food or pay for fuel over the festive period.

A number of community organisations and groups can offer emergency food supplies to families who may be struggling to make ends meet. Fuel vouchers are also available through the council’s Emergency Support Scheme (Please note restricted opening over the Christmas period – see below) and from social housing providers.

For those who have tested positive for Covid and are self-isolating, fuel vouchers can also be issued by the council’s Community Support and Volunteer Line on 0800 073 0043.

Where to find food support

Knowsley Foodbank / Knowsley Food Support are both run by the Big Help Project.  There are two ways to access food from a Knowsley Foodbank site, either:

  • Obtain a voucher, available from organisations across the borough including many GPs, schools, Citizens Advice etc.  This is presented to the foodbank volunteers at the site.  Many organisations who would normally offer vouchers may be closed.
  • A telephone assessment through Knowsley Food Support 0151 538 8243.  You may be asked to attend a foodbank site to collect the food.

Social Housing tenants: ForHousing tenants should contact 0300 123 5522 or TESS tessknowsley@forhousing.co.uk who will assess eligibility. Livv tenants can contact 0151 290 7000 and ask for an advisory team referral.

Children’s activity sessions, including a free, healthy meal, are delivered as part of the Knowsley SNAP Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. Read more here

Food is also available through community groups across the borough. The locations of the organisations and the support they offer with food and essentials is listed below.

Support with fuel payments

Any resident who is in need and is responsible for household energy bills can apply for fuel vouchers for prepayment meters from the Council’s Emergency Support Scheme.  This scheme will close from 23 December and open on 4 January 2022

Livv tenants can receive support with fuel costs, including a review of utility bills (phone, gas/electricity, water) and support to move to cheaper tariffs/reduce costs.  As part of this, a fuel voucher may be awarded. ForHousing tenants may receive support with fuel costs.  This may include a voucher.  Contact 0300 123 5522.

Some community groups offer fuel vouchers from the Fuel Bank Foundation.  This is for people who cannot afford to top up a prepayment meter only.
