Knowsley has launched a new plan for the borough in which council services, local partners and residents work together for a healthier Knowsley.
Knowsley’s Healthy Weight Plan 2019-2022 takes a life course approach to support residents to attain a healthy weight for themselves and their families from pregnancy right through to older age.
Work to promote healthy weight is underway across the borough, and has been over recent years, through a wide range of initiatives.
How Knowsley will achieve a healthy weight
The Healthy Weight Declaration signed by the council takes into account the need to protect our children from inappropriate marketing by the food and drink industry, such as marketing in close proximity to schools, promotions within schools, and events on local authority controlled sites.
Enhanced Lifestyle Sessions delivered in schools offer families information about healthy eating, providing physical activities using technology to track progress and fruit and vegetable ‘take home’ packs with recipes to try out.
The School Meals Service provides good quality, nutritious meals, and has been piloting portion sizes and making fruit and vegetables the default option for desserts.
Work with parents and primary school children and young people aged 11 to 15 has identified the challenge for people in identifying which foods are healthy and unhealthy. A number of different initiatives are aiming to address this.
The free community cycling programme offers the opportunity to all residents, including those with disabilities, to experience cycling safely with trained ride leaders from four hubs across the borough. While Green Gyms have been installed in parks and green spaces across the borough.
Leisure centres in Knowsley offer discounted gold membership for the most inactive residents and a free 12 week exercise programme for residents with long term condition with a GP referral.
Helping people take the right steps to achieve a healthy weight
Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “The views and experiences of Knowsley residents, young and old, have been central to the development of the Healthy Weight Plan and over the coming months we will support local people to take the necessary steps to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
“I think most of us are aware of the importance of a healthy weight in helping to reduce the risk of developing serious health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
“What you may not appreciate it is how much a healthy weight can improve our energy levels, quality of sleep, self-esteem and general mental health not to mention the immune system. Who wouldn’t want to strive for a healthy weight with all those benefits?”
