Have your say on Council Tax for empty homes

by Jonathan Kearney

Knowsley Council is asking residents to have their say on regulations affecting empty properties.

New Government regulations would enable Knowsley Council to make an additional charge to the Council Tax levied for properties that have been empty and unfurnished for one year and also for properties that are furnished but not occupied on a regular basis.

Under the new regulations, Knowsley Council would be able to charge an additional premium of 100% of the standard Council Tax due for properties that have been unoccupied and unfurnished for a year. The Council would also be able to add an additional 100% premium charge to the standard Council Tax charge for properties that are not occupied on a regular basis.

The proposed changes to the Council Tax charged for empty and unfurnished properties would be introduced from 1 April 2024, with the changes to the charges for those properties that are not occupied on a regular basis introduced from 1 April 2025.

You can have your say until Friday 16 February 2024.
