In a world of fast fashion, social media and high-living costs, trends can prove expensive to the environment, and more importantly – to parents trying to keep up with them.
Halloween is no exception – the spooky season has become increasingly popular during the past few years, and each year little-ones are looking for their next trick-or-treat costume.
And did you know, it’s estimated that 39 million people dress up for the occasion and around 90% of families buy new costumes each year – roughly around 40% of those Halloween costumes are worn only once, before they’re thrown away!
That’s why Knowsley Council’s Recycling Engagement Team are inviting parents across Knowsley to re-use instead of buying new this year, by participating in a Halloween Swap-Shop.
Speaking about the campaign, Cabinet Member for Communities & Neighbourhoods, Cllr Shelley Powell said: “This is a great scheme which I hope will be a benefit to many parents and children across the borough.
“Halloween has become much more costly over the years – even now home accessories are out in the shops. I hope this initiative helps to save households some money, all whilst helping to reduce the amount of waste and single wear textiles.”
Here’s how the swap-shops work…
Donate your old costumes
🎃Parents donate their unwanted dress-up/Halloween costumes.
🎃Recycling bins will be available at each library across the borough, so simply pop along and leave it there.
Pick up a different costume
🎃During October half-term, the team will be facilitating Halloween swap-shops, where parents can come along and pick up a FREE pre-loved costume.
Come along on these dates:
- Monday 26th October, Halewood Library, 10:30am – 12pm
- Monday 26th October, Stockbridge Library, 2pm – 3:30pm
- Tuesday 27th October, Prescot Library, 10:30am – 12pm
- Wednesday 28th October, Huyton Library, 2pm – 3:30pm
