Green light for community hub in Huyton

by Jonathan Kearney

Plans to transform an empty unit in a prime location in Huyton village centre into a community hub are now progressing.  This follows the recent announcement that the Council has successfully secured £19.1m from Homes England’s Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land fund.

Planning approval has now been granted to change the former B&M unit and adjacent unit from retail to mixed use and work will commence immediately on transforming the space into a community hub and office space.

Huyton Library will relocate into this central, high street location on the ground floor, whilst the upper floor will initially be used as office space.

As well as internal works to transform the space into a thriving community hub, the proposals also include minor alterations to the building’s exterior, improving its overall appearance and enhancing the village centre.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I’m delighted that our plans to create a community hub in the heart of Huyton village centre are now able to progress.

“This is a key phase in our wider regeneration plans for Huyton village centre and it’s important that facilities that are needed and used by the local community are prioritised.

“By relocating the library into the high street, it will make it even more accessible for users of all ages and by creating community spaces too, it will be a real hub of activity, right in the heart of the village centre for people to meet, socialise and learn.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing this work progress over the coming months.”

The new community hub is expected to be open next year.
