Get your walking shoes on for the Prescot Heritage Walk

by Alison Cornmell

If you are wild about walking and hungry for some heritage, then this event is ideal for you!

On Thursday 21 July a 3-mile Heritage Walk will take place around Prescot. Starting from Carr Lane Woods, the walk will take in many of the town’s historic buildings and prominent landmarks, including a close-up view of the new Shakespeare North Playhouse.

There will be three walking groups, who will all do the same route but start at staggered times from 12noon (12noon, 12.15pm and 12.30pm). The walk will last approx. 2 hours and finish at Prescot Soccer Centre (119 Warrington Road, L35 5AD) where participants will be able to relax and enjoy some refreshments and live music.

The tours will be led by Marie, Richard and Simons who are qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guides for the Liverpool City Region.  Blue Badge Guides are the most highly qualified guides in the UK and offer their unique knowledge and experiences to discover the best of Britain.

On these walks, you’ll learn more about the fascinating hilltop town of Prescot which once led the world in watch and cable making and was home of the only free-standing Elizabethan playhouse outside of London.  You’ll discover the overlooked and hidden histories of the town, including the oldest building, the smallest street and also the links with the great playwright Shakespeare – and the chance to visit the new Shakespeare North Playhouse.

It’s all part of the Knowsley Sporting Legends Relay which will travel the length of the borough from 18 – 23 July to celebrate Knowsley’s sporting heritage. This is a key event in our year as Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture.

Spaces are limited so anyone interested in taking part needs to register online to avoid missing out. Please ensure that you select the correct time slot when booking as spaces are limited and you will not be able to join a different heritage walk on the day.

Remember, you will be outdoors in the great British weather, so please ensure you have suitable footwear and clothing.
