Further Progress made on the New Retail Development in Kirkby

by Nicola Appleton

More foundations have been laid and steelwork is progressing for the new units on the retail development site in Kirkby town centre.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, work has continued on the programme throughout the last four months, albeit working within challenging conditions and adhering to social distancing measures.

Foundations and steelwork have now been completed on units 10-13.

The main steelwork is in place for unit 15 and for unit 14 (which is the new KFC drive-through restaurant).  Steelwork will soon be put in place for the new Morrisons petrol station.

Work is also progressing on the new Morrisons superstore and steelwork is scheduled to go up in the autumn.

Work started on the retail development on 9 December 2019, just a matter of weeks after the Council purchased the town centre from St Modwen.  The retail development will include a 45,000 feet2 Morrisons superstore and a six-pump petrol station, a KFC drive-through restaurant, and a new store for Home Bargains.  Other operators have also expressed an interest in units on the site.

Councillor Tony Brennan, Regeneration and Economic Development Cabinet Member, said:

“It’s great to see the new retail development taking shape with the units now physically coming out of the ground.  GMI Construction has done an amazing job to get to where we are today, given that they have been working throughout a pandemic.  Our residents have waited a long time for this development and we are delighted to be able to deliver it for them.  I look forward to seeing further progress on the site over the coming months.”
