The scheme to bring a cinema to Kirkby Town Centre takes another step forward this week as the second phase of ground investigation works are completed.
Activity has been taking place on the location for the Cinema (formerly the site of Kirkby Library) from this week (w/c 19 July 2021). The planned work involves additional ground investigations to ensure that the site is ready for construction to begin.
Knowsley Council’s plans for the site include a multi-screen cinema, along with three food and drink outlets.
Reel Cinemas are committed to operating the cinema development in Kirkby and the Council is continuing with discussions with a number of food and drink operators who are interested in the other units on the site.
Councillor Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, said: “Our ambitious plans for Kirkby Town Centre go beyond the delivery of a supermarket and improved retail offer.
“We asked the local community what they wanted to see in the town centre and, along with a better choice of shops, they also wanted to see a leisure offer including a cinema and more places to eat and drink.
“Throughout the pandemic, we have been working hard to keep the town centre programme on target, and that has included a lot of work behind the scenes on the cinema scheme. This latest work on the site itself will ensure that the land is primed and ready for construction work to commence.”
As well the cinema operator for the scheme being secure, the Council has also put planning consent in place.
The scheme has also attracted funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, who have invested £2.8m in the scheme, with the remaining funding being provided by the Council.
Metro Mayor for the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, added: “We were pleased to support the Council with their purchase of Kirkby Town Centre and people can now see the benefit of that decision as the developments in the area start to open to customers. As well as the £10m which we have already invested, we made it clear that we would back further stages of regeneration – the further £2.8m of investment in the cinema scheme is another sign of our commitment to Kirkby. Progress on the new retail development has been excellent and this latest phase will be transformational. From a personal point of view, I’m really pleased to see the regeneration of the area where I grew up.”
It is expected that work on the new cinema scheme will commence by the end of this year.
