Have you got what it takes to be amazing this foster care fortnight?

by Sandra Issar

This Foster Care Fortnight, 11 to 24 May, Knowsley’s Fostering Service is highlighting the change foster care can make to a child’s future and asking people to think about whether this rewarding role might be right for you.

Knowsley Fostering Service’s moving film ‘Elliot’s Story’ tells the true life story of 10 year old ‘Elliot’ whose life was changed the day he met “the nice people” – his foster carers who shaped his life for the better.

The film shows how with love and guidance the lives of some of Knowsley’s most vulnerable children can be changed for the better, whilst highlighting the positive impact of foster care and how equally rewarding it can be for foster carers.

Christine, who fosters with Knowsley Fostering Service, explains why she finds foster care so rewarding:

My favourite part of fostering is watching the children experiencing things for the very first time and seeing the joy in their faces as they discover fairgrounds and beaches and simple things like making scones.

“I love seeing how proud they are of themselves when making life choices and earning rewards in their education. I look forward to celebrating their achievements year on year and knowing I’ve had a part in that.”

Cllr Margaret Harvey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services in Knowsley, said:

Our Foster Carers are amazing, all year round and in all kinds of emergency situations. We are so grateful for the fantastic support and care they are providing for our children and young people in these challenging times but we still need more amazing carers to make a difference.

“If you are someone who thinks you can give a loving and nurturing home to a child at a time when they need it most, please consider fostering. Our team will be happy to talk to you today and answer any questions you might have.”
