For the record – closure of The Venue

by Gemma Melling

At Cabinet on Wednesday, 20 November the decision was made to close The Venue in Huyton from 1 January 2020.

This decision follows a thorough review which concluded that The Venue requires significant investment to ensure it is ‘fit for purpose’ whilst also recognising the dwindling bookings being made for the building, despite efforts over the last few years to increase bookings. This included new bistro offers, discounted wedding packages and a varied programme of events from tribute acts to cabaret nights. However, The Venue continued to operate at a loss.

Knowsley Council has ambitious plans for Huyton Village Centre, helping to accelerate growth and improvement in the local area as well as providing businesses, residents and visitors alike with enhanced facilities they need and expect from a thriving village centre.

Residents were recently surveyed to gather views on improvements they would like to see in Huyton Village Centre. Improvements to parking facilities, as well as the retail and restaurant offer, were key priorities.

A programme of improvement works in Huyton Village Centre is well underway with a number of food / drink outlets already opened (Eton Place) with many more due to open their doors over the coming weeks (El Pueblo, The Coffee House and Common). In addition, the first phase of the shop front improvement scheme has finished, with phase two underway and there’s been the introduction of the popular family-friendly, community event – Huyton Live with the next date arranged for Friday, 20 December 2019. Plans for the village centre also include improvements to public realm.

Whilst this transformation is on-going, The Venue site could provide additional temporary car parking to support more visitors coming into the village to visit one of the many new offerings.

Longer-term the site will support the exciting development plans for the village centre and could become a residential, office or leisure development.
