Last year, the council invited the people of Knowsley to get involved in naming the brand-new food recycling vehicles.

Over 700 entries were received to name nine of the new fleet of food waste recycling vehicles and this week, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Graham Morgan, and Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods met with the lucky winners.

The winners were:-

  • Larry Leftovers submitted by resident Brooke Stuart
  • Foodie Mercury submitted by resident Anthony Houghton
  • Oprah Binfrey – submitted by Harry Smith, aged 9, Millbrook Primary School
  • Bin Diesel – submitted by Archie Conneely, aged 9, Millbrook Primary School
  • Donut Dave – submitted by Olivia Miller, aged 7, Lucas Woods, aged 7 and Lily Taylor, aged 8, Prescot Primary School
  • The Bincredible Hulk – submitted by Lucia Ledger, aged 9, Plantation Primary School
  • Mr Munch – submitted by Oliver Hogkiss, aged 4, Evelyn Primary School

As well as seeing their winning name on the vehicles, the school children were also presented with a certificate and a ‘goody bag’ which included their design on the front of the bag, a teddy wearing a hi-vis Recycling Engagement team jacket, a Recycling Engagement team reusable water bottle, recycled highlighters and pens. The residents were also presented with a certificate and a Shakespeare North Playhouse voucher.

In addition, two further vehicles have been named following a competition for staff at the Council with the winners confirmed as Marvin Critchley, Recycling Engagement Officer, for Paddy the Caddy and Janice Dutton, Finance Officer, for Vincent Van Scoff.

Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, said “It was great to meet the lucky winners this week and see their winning names on our vehicles. The creativity we have here in the borough is fantastic. Well done to our winners and I will keep a look-out for your vehicles next month when our new food waste service commences.”

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, added “We had an overwhelming response to our competition and I’d like to thank everyone who submitted an entry. It was an incredibly difficult job to choose just nine winners from the creative names we received, but congratulations to our winners.

“These vehicles are going to help us completely transform how we dispose of food waste across Knowsley and will be around for many years to come, so it will be great to see them out and about next month when the food waste recycling scheme goes live.”
