Home Children and Young People Flashback Friday: New playgrounds open in Knowsley

Flashback Friday: New playgrounds open in Knowsley

by Gemma Melling

Today we look back to 2010 when the last of 28 new playgrounds was officially opened.

It was the end of a two-year Play Pathfinder programme which provided the new playspaces for children and young people right across the borough.

Hollyoaks star, 10-year-old Ellis Hollins was the VIP guest at a celebration event when the final playground, Copthorne Adventure Playground in Kirkby, officially opened.

Ellis, who played Tom Cunningham in the soap, was joined by local young people, trying out the many attractions at the Peter Pan themed play space – including the sunken pirate ship, slides, zip wire swing, and many more.

The Play Pathfinder programme in Knowsley saw £4.36m spent on the new playspaces which combined innovative climbing frames and swings with a range of natural play features, including boulders, musical sculptures, themed structures and natural surfacing.

It was hoped that the new playspaces would help encourage children, young people and families to live healthy, active lifestyles.
