If you’re aged between 40 and 74 then it’s time to find out about your free NHS Health Check.
The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults aged 40-74 which is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions, so an NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk.
If you’re in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition e.g. diabetes or high blood pressure, you can expect to receive an invite from your GP for a free NHS Health Check every five years, or you can contact your GP to find out more.
During the check, which takes about 20 – 30 minutes, you’ll be asked some simple questions about your family history and choices which may put your health at risk. Your height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels will also be checked.
Based on your results, you’ll be given personalised advice about how to make small changes to your lifestyle which can have a big impact on your health and wellbeing, or the need for further tests or treatment will be identified.
Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care Cllr Sean Donnelly said: “The NHS Health check provides a real opportunity for people to take control of their own health and lower their chances of developing serious health problems in the future. Even if you’re feeling well, it’s worth having your health check now. Make time to today to contact your local GP practice to book your appointment.”
The NHS health check interactive website provides information about what happens at the health check, when and how to get one, and how to lower your risk.
