The countdown to Christmas is now underway and Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards Team is raising awareness about the dangers of counterfeit goods.
Buy products from reputable sellers
- You may pay a little more but that’s often to ensure the product has had quality and safety checks.
- Look out for the ‘CE’ or ‘UKCA’ mark. This means that the manufacturer has assessed the item for safety.
Tips for avoiding buying fakes online
- Check the profile of the seller and website are official.
- Check reviews of the website on consumer sites.
- Spelling and grammar mistakes can indicate fakes.
- Locations – counterfeit sellers often ship from abroad.
- If the price is too good to be true, is probably is.
Electricals
Counterfeit gadgets can be dangerous fire hazards. Look out for heavily discounted goods from unfamiliar sellers when shopping online and stay safe. If the item costs a fraction of the price, it is likely to be fake. Counterfeit headphones and hair straighteners are among some of the counterfeit electricals that can be fire hazards.
Toys
Fake toys aren’t safety tested and can pose serious choking hazards to children. Ensure a safe and happy festive period by purchasing from reputable sources. Look out for signs like unofficial websites pretending to be real brands. Cheap, counterfeit, versions of products are often poor quality, easily breakable and can, in some cases, be dangerous. Watch out for button batteries which power many small toys. These can be especially dangerous if swallowed.
Cosmetics
Fake cosmetics can contain harmful chemicals. Horse urine and rat droppings are just two of the horrifying ingredients found in fake cosmetics.
These can cause scars and burns and may not have the same effect as the genuine product.
