Falls Prevention Week: Helping Knowsley Residents Stay Safe, Active and Independent

by Lisa Bennett

During Falls Prevention Week (21-25 September) Knowsley Council is raising awareness of how residents can reduce their risk of falling and the support that is available to help them stay safe, active and independent.

Anyone can have a fall, but the risk increases as we get older or if we experience mobility, balance, sight or hearing problems.

Falls can lead to injury, a loss of confidence and a fear of falling again, but there are many simple steps people can take to reduce their risk.

Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Health said:

“Preventing falls is much more than avoiding injury. It’s about helping people maintain their confidence, independence and quality of life. We have a range of excellent services across Knowsley that support residents to stay active, improve their wellbeing and live safely at home. I encourage anyone who has experienced a fall, or is worried about falling, to seek advice and take advantage of the support available.”

Simple steps to prevent falls

Making small changes can make a big difference to your health, wellbeing and independence. Residents are encouraged to:

  • Stay active and take part in activities that improve strength and balance. Take a look at the NHS Guidelines.
  • Wear well-fitting shoes or slippers with good grip.
  • Carry a mobile phone or wear a personal alarm.
  • Use a non-slip mat in the bath or shower.
  • Consider fitting handrails on steps and grab rails in bathrooms.
  • Use a walking aid if needed.
  • Eat well and stay hydrated – not eating and drinking enough can make you feel lightheaded or faint.
  • Look after your bone health – eat foods containing calcium, and make sure you get enough vitamin D.
  • Attend regular eye tests and have your hearing checked – ear problems can affect your balance.
  • Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you think your medication may be affecting your balance.
