More help is on its way for Knowsley families to help them cope with the financial pressures brought by the festive season.
As well as funding free school meals over the Christmas school holidays, Knowsley Council is providing an additional payment of £30 to the families of each means tested pupil. Eligible families received the first £15 payment in December and will now receive the second £15 voucher this month.
The funding will support more than 8,300 families across the borough. Vouchers will be sent directly to families via text or email in the coming days.
These payments have come from Knowsley Council’s £1.9m award from the Government’s Household Support Fund which was established to support vulnerable households with essentials over the winter period. It can be used to meet daily costs such as food, clothing and heating.
Cllr Jayne Aston, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “We know that the festive period can be incredibly challenging for our families with spiralling costs. It is important that we provide support when it is needed and where it is needed and the festive period is definitely when it is needed.
“As well as funding the daily free school meal allowance in December, we also wanted to ensure families had a little bit extra to go some way to helping with the extra food costs. Given the additional expenses incurred over Christmas, we also know that there is little money left over in January. The additional payment we are making this month will hopefully go some way to alleviate some of these pressures.
“Given the last two years we have endured, we all want to enjoy the festivities and I’m sure the extra school meals allocation will be appreciated by our families.”
