Teams from Knowsley Council and its partners will be out and about in the Whitefield ward of Kirkby on Thursday, 19 March, tackling a range of environmental issues, from littering and graffiti to fly tipping and dog fouling.
It’s one of a series of Environmental Action Days being held across the borough, bringing partner agencies together to spend a day focusing on the most pressing issues in a specific location.
What’s happening on the day?
Activities on the day will include:
- clearing litter and fly tipping in hotspot areas
- removal of waste and abandoned bins
- cleansing and grounds maintenance inspections
- sewer baiting to control the rat population in the area. (Here’s some advice about controlling ratsand keeping them away from homes, businesses and gardens.)
Council officers will carry out checks on retailers and do food hygiene inspections, as well as speaking to businesses and residents who are failing to manage their waste, taking enforcement action where appropriate.
Centre 63, Old Hall Lane, Kirkby, will be the base for a number of organisations offering advice and support from 10am. These include:
- From 10am to 2pm A trained officer will be offering free microchipping, a ‘chip and check’ service as well as advice to pet owners and information promoting responsible dog ownership.
- 10am – 12pm: Representatives from Citizens Advice Bureau will be offering advice and support to individuals on a wide range of housing-related issues. Their services aim to help people understand their rights and responsibilities, resolve disputes, and prevent or address housing problems.
- Knowsley’s Crime and Communities team will be at town centre fast food outlets offering advice and reassurance around anti-social behaviour.
- 10am – 12pm: Healthwatch Knowsley – providing information and signposting – helping people find reliable advice about health and social care.
- 10am – 12pm: Change Grow Live offering free, confidential support across a number of life areas: addiction, mental health, housing, criminal justice, family issues, and more.
- Knowsley’s Green Space Rangers will be organising litter picks at Millbrook Millennium Green and St Chad’s Gardens as part of the Keep Britain Tidy- Great British Spring Clean events. Pupils from St Michael and All Angels Primary and Kirkby CE Primary will also be holding a litter pick.

This initiative is an opportunity to take targeted action and tackle specific environmental issues in a ward, encourage behaviour change and enable communities to participate in looking after where they live and work.”
