Teams from Knowsley Council and its partners will be out and about in St Michael’s ward, Huyton on Wednesday, 19 November, tackling a range of environmental issues, from littering and graffiti to fly tipping and dog fouling.
It’s one of a series of Environmental Action Days being held across the borough, bringing partner agencies together to spend a day focusing on the most pressing issues in a specific location.
What’s happening on the day?
Activities on the day will include:
- clearing litter and fly tipping in hotspot areas
- removal of waste and abandoned bins
- cleansing and grounds maintenance inspections
- sewer baiting to control the rat population in the area. (Here’s some advice about controlling ratsand keeping them away from homes, businesses and gardens.)
Council officers will carry out food hygiene inspections and speak to businesses and residents who are failing to manage their waste, taking enforcement action where appropriate.
Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park, Huyton, will be the base for a number of activities, including:
Healthy Homes Roadshow: 10am – 12pm. Providing advice, support and signposting on environmental and public health issues, as well as housing-related concerns. Helping residents improve their living conditions and access the right services for a healthier home environment. Find out more about services taking part in the roadshow. Knowsley’s Recycling Engagement Team will be at the event offering advice and helpful tips on recycling.
The council’s Digital Team and Library Service – 10am – 12pm – will be offering information and signposting residents to the digital support available in Knowsley which tackles digital exclusion, digital poverty and the ‘library offer’ – including library events and promotion of the Digital Buddies scheme.
Healthwatch Knowsley: 10am – 12pm. Promoting Healthwatch services – explaining what Healthwatch does and signposting to support services. They will also be speaking to attendees about their experiences with local NHS and social care services, noting concerns or positive stories.
NHS Liver Van: 9.30am – 3pm. Offering FibroScan tests – a quick, non-invasive scan to assess liver health and detect conditions like fibrosis or cirrhosis and Hepatitis C testing to identify infections early and link people to treatment.
Smoke Free Knowsley: 10am – 12pm. One-to-one support and free stop-smoking medication – including nicotine replacement therapy.
Citizens Advice: 10am – 12pm. Providing advice and support on a wide range of housing-related issues. Helping people understand their rights and responsibilities, resolve disputes, and prevent or address housing problems.
Livv Housing: 10am – 12pm. Providing advice on maintaining a safe and healthy home and offering guidance on tackling damp and mould, improving ventilation, and accessing support for repairs or adaptations. The advisor will also share information about Livv Housing services, tenancy support, and signpost residents to resources that help create a healthier living environment.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “Our programme of action days have been a great success and shown how we can come together with partners to make a real impact in areas across the borough. This initiative is an opportunity to take targeted action and tackle specific environmental issues in a ward, encourage behaviour change and enable communities to participate in looking after where they live and work.”
Council teams involved in the action days will include Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, Streetscene, Pest Control, Waste and Recycling, Safer Communities, as well as partners including social housing providers.
