Employers take advantage of free SEND webinars

by Jonathan Kearney

A webinar to raise awareness of learning difficulties and disabilities has proven popular to organisations and employers in the region.

The free webinar is delivered monthly by Knowsley Council’s Employment Support Officer, Sue Temple-Fielding and Liverpool City Council’s Employment Support Officer, Chloe Foran.

Available to employers and organisations in the Liverpool City Region, the one-hour session raises awareness of Specific Learning Difficulties, Learning Disabilities and Autism.  It also covers support in the workplace and support available for businesses.

The sessions are proving to be a great success, with several organisations requesting they be delivered in-house for their staff.

Since January 2021, the free one-hour webinar has been accessed by 186 people from across 53 different organisations and feedback has been extremely positive.

Charlie Barnard, Tenancy Support & Sustainment Manager at ForHousing attended the June webinar and could see how it would be beneficial for other staff within his organisation. He said: “I found the webinar training session very informative and the contents really engaging. I think the mixture of video, the presentation and on-line poll was interesting and appealing. Both presenters came across as very passionate people and were very knowledgeable. I have many years’ experience working with tenants who present in crisis with a variety of vulnerabilities and diagnosis. I can say I gained a variety of knowledge from attending. Attendance is well worth an hour of anyone’s time. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Mike Wharton, Head of Service for Inclusion at Knowsley Council, said: “I am glad ForHousing recognise the benefits for their wider staff teams of attending this valuable training that the Inclusion Department delivers across the local area. Preparation for adulthood is a key priority within our SEND Strategy and increasing employment opportunities, not just in terms of accessing employment but also maintaining employment is vital. This type of awareness raising is key to employers offering a disability friendly environment that helps maintain employment and improve long term outcomes of our SEND population.”
