Elected members approve continuing COVID-19 related absences from Council meetings

by Guy Murphy

Knowsley Council has approved the continuing absence of any elected member from Council meetings due to reasons associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic until the Annual Meeting in May 2022.

The Local Government Act 1972 states that if a Member fails to attend a meeting for a period of six consecutive months, from the date of his/her last attendance, they will cease to be a member of the authority. The approved resolution will prevent this from coming into force when an Elected Member has been unable to attend due to COVID-19.

Throughout the pandemic the Council has approved a number of resolutions in order to ensure that meetings can be held where possible and Elected Members can continue to represent their residents.

Although the Council has continued to follow Government guidance and implemented measures to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection, there is still a risk to some individuals. There is also occasions where a Member is unable to attend due illness and self-isolation rules.

The Council will continue to support Elected Members to attend meetings where possible.
