Dress for the world you want in ‘Second Hand September’

by Cathy Sheel

Knowsley Council is supporting ‘Second Hand September’ a campaign which encourages people to buy second hand clothing and tackle the environmental pollution caused by the fashion industry.

The campaign, started by Oxfam, calls on people to shop second hand or hold a clothes swap at home, at work or in the community during September to take a stance against fast fashion and dress for a fairer world.

Why Second Hand September?

Fashion has become one of the most polluting industries on the planet.

The production and transportation of clothes causes mass-pollution – with precious resources like water being used in the production process. Fashion, especially fast fashion, has created a throwaway culture that leaves millions of clothes in landfill every year.

Get involved in Second Hand September

There are many benefits of shopping second-hand, that are good for both your purse and the planet. Here are some hints and tips to help you get involved:

  • Hold a clothes swap for family and friends. Swapping is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to reduce waste, protect the environment and upgrade your wardrobe without spending a penny!
  • When out shopping have a clear idea of what your personal style is, so you’re not overwhelmed by the different options or pick items randomly. Don’t just buy something because it’s cheap – consider if you really love the item. Ask yourself questions: will this item go with the rest of my wardrobe? Can I imagine it with a variety of outfits?
  • It’s also a great excuse to have a much-needed wardrobe clear-out. And while shopping at a pre-loved clothing store why not donate your unwanted clothing, freeing up wardrobe space too.
  • If you like shopping online, you can find thousands of pre-loved clothes ready to find a new home.
  • Revisit your own wardrobe and fall back in love with your existing clothes.
  • Take time to care for your clothes and keep them looking their best. Air dry clothes – not just good for the planet but good for your clothes too! Brush up on your sewing skills to make any minor repairs.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “By recirculating our clothes – buying second hand or holding ‘clothes swaps’ with friends, colleagues or in the community – we will buy less and help to reduce the damage to our planet.

“I’ll be supporting Second Hand September by having a wardrobe clear out and donating some of my pre-loved clothes to good causes. Remember that the most sustainable item of clothing is the one already in your wardrobe!”
