Don’t miss out on a free NHS health check

by Guy Murphy

Residents aged 40-74 are being urged to take up the offer a free NHS health check which could help to spot potentially life-threatening and undiagnosed conditions.

An increasing number of people are taking up the offer of having their free NHS health check. Between April and June this year 1,674 40 – 74 year-olds went to their GP for a health check – the highest figure for that period in recent years.

Health checks can help to spot potential health problems such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia. By spotting these issues early, residents can make positive changes to their diet, get more active or, if necessary, go on medication to manage their condition.

Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Health said:

“These health checks really are an effective way of spotting issues or risks early, while encouraging those identified as being at a higher risk to take preventive action. The health check gives people the opportunity to reduce the risk of serious illness in the longer term.  Anyone over the age of 40 is eligible. It’s free, quick, simple and only takes 20 to 30 minutes. I would urge anyone who is eligible to contact their GP to arrange theirs – it could be a simple step that could save your life!”
