Development plans for Huyton Village Centre take a step forward

by Emily Maguire

Following an extensive and competitive procurement process, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet has appointed Genr8 Kajima Regeneration Ltd as the Development Management partner to support Huyton’s transformational development plans.

This is a significant step forward for Huyton Village Centre and it will enable the Council to work collaboratively with an experienced development team who bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge to support every step of the development and delivery process.

Genr8 Kajima will build on the achievements already delivered in Huyton including the contemporary makeover of 14 shop fronts, emergence of a growing night-time economy with an array of food and drink outlets opening their doors over the last three years and the installation of the gateway lighting project on Archway Road.

The Council has ambitious plans for Huyton and is progressing it’s 10 year development plan which includes the creation of a commercial district (which will include the Council’s HQ, a hotel, commercial and residential accommodation), a village green and significant improvements to the high street and station gateway area. This provides the potential for approximately 1,700 jobs and a £50.8m boost to the local economy.

Work is well underway on the Council’s Round 2 bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to support Huyton’s development plans and Genr8 Kajima’s wealth of knowledge, experience and resources will help to strengthen this bid. The  £20m bid will help to accelerate the delivery of development plans for Huyton and will be submitted in advance of the Government deadline for submission on 6 July 2022. Importantly, the regeneration of Huyton will provide a greater choice for residents and visitors, attract more businesses into the Village Centre as well as supporting established businesses with the increased footfall.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said “I’m delighted to be working with Genr8 Kajima Regeneration Limited. They have a successful track record of delivery and they will help us to accelerate our development plans for Huyton.

“We are working hard on our Round 2 Levelling Up Funding Bid which would really support us to kick-start our development plans.

“Residents and communities will also play a big part too in shaping our plans for Huyton and working with Genr8 and we will continue to engage with people who live, work, visit or invest in Huyton.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our plans progress.”

Genr8 Kajima Regeneration Limited is a leading regeneration specialist with an established track record and has already delivered over £100m of town centre regeneration, including Rochdale Riverside (a 200,000 sq ft retail and leisure scheme).  They are also currently nearing completion of delivering the £200m Smithfield mixed use development in Stoke.

GKRL Director, Mike Smith commented: “We are delighted to have been selected by Knowsley Council to work alongside them in delivering their vision for Huyton. The proposals are ambitious and will transform the town centre and create an innovative mixed-use environment in which the whole community can thrive, and which will be the catalyst for further regeneration throughout the borough. It is a truly exciting time for Huyton.”
