Work to demolish unused and outdated parts of the Prescot Shopping Centre site has now been successfully completed, marking a major step forward in the site’s transformation.
The former Stephenson Printworks building and the former supermarket unit (which was vacant for 18 years) are both now fully demolished, opening up the site and creating possibilities for further investment into Prescot town centre.
This important milestone builds strong momentum for the future regeneration of the shopping centre site and signals real progress towards its next phase of development.
The works have been successfully carried out by A J Kelly & Co (UK) Ltd whose high-quality delivery and proactive approach have been instrumental in driving progress on site.
Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development commented:

Earlier this year, proposals for the ongoing regeneration of Prescot Town Centre and the shopping centre site were supported by Knowsley Council’s Cabinet.
Working with preferred developer Cityheart, the council has shaped an emerging vision to transform the site and continue to strengthen Prescot’s position as a thriving town.
Key elements of the proposed redevelopment include:
- A new library, museum and cultural space, to create a central hub for learning, community activity and visitors.
- Improved retail space closer to the high street.
- New open-air pedestrian routes, with 24/7 access between key areas of the town to improve safety and accessibility.
- Enhanced car parking facilities to support shops, services and future growth.
- Space for future new homes, including affordable properties to meet the local need for 1‑ and 2‑bedroom housing.
The Shopping Centre, library and museum remain open, and Knowsley Council is working closely with tenants throughout this process.
Next steps
Improvement works to the shopping centre car park are scheduled to begin within the coming weeks, with further public consultation to follow at a later stage as plans for the site are developed in more detail.
