Daryl discovers a passion for gardening thanks to council job programme

by Guy Murphy

In 2019, Knowsley Council launched their Empower Job Carving Programme (now known as the Empower Job Design Programme) to create to create meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities for residents with additional support needs or learning disabilities.

Daryl secured one of the first job carved roles as a Grounds Maintenance Assistant at Eastcroft Park Primary School and role which has seen him develop new passions and skills.

Day to day, Daryl’s tasks include tidying up around the playground, weeding, taking care of the flower beds, litter picking, and jet washing.  Since taking up the role, Daryl has developed ‘green fingers’ and takes great pride in his work, ensuring the school grounds are always in immaculate condition.

Daryl’s passion for the job and hard work have not gone unnoticed. Everyone connected with the school, from teachers to pupils, appreciate his hard work and the care he puts into looking after the school grounds. Parents and visitors frequently comment on how well maintained the school looks.

Daryl said: “Having this job keeps me active and healthy – if I didn’t have this job, I would be bored at home. I love coming into work each day and keeping the school grounds in top condition.”

In addition to his outdoor duties, Daryl has also become a valued member of the school community. He gets along well with everyone, including the ladies in the office, who he likes to have a laugh and a joke with and often spoils them by bringing in biscuits.

Always willing to help out others, Daryl often helps the kitchen team by taking out the cardboard to be recycled – which is often rewarded with a sneaky tuna sandwich.

School staff describe Daryl as a whirlwind, constantly on the move and someone who brings real energy and enthusiasm to the team.

Julie Withey Head Teacher at Eastcroft Park primary school said: “Daryl has become an important member of the Eastcroft Park team. He works meticulously to ensure that the school buildings and grounds are kept to a high standard. He uses his own initiative to plan his work, spotting things that need to be done and keeping Jimmy the site manager on his toes.

“Daryl is always cheerful and brightens our day with his cheeky sense of humour.”
