Cycle to School Week 2026

by Lisa Bennett

School children across Knowsley are being encouraged to take a step – or pedal! – in the right direction and join Cycle to School Week 2026.

The national initiative takes place between Monday 5 – Friday 9 October and encourages families to take a new route to the school gate — one that’s quicker, healthier, cheaper and a whole lot more fun.

Cycle to School Week is a celebration of everyday cycling. It’s a chance to build confidence, try something new, and discover how good the school run can feel on wheels.

The initiative aims to foster a love for cycling among children, promote physical activity, and reduce traffic congestion around schools.

Benefits of cycling to school

  • Saving money on fuel costs
  • Keeping fit and feeling energised to start the day
  • Removing the stress of rush hour traffic and finding a parking space
  • Helping the environment by reducing CO2 emissions

Bikeability training

Throughout Cycle to School Week BikeRight are delivering Bikeability training in schools across Knowsley.

The free cycle safety training sessions help teach young people the practical skills and understanding they need to travel by bike including reading road signs, recognising hazards and sharing space with pedestrians and road users.

Schools in Knowsley can find out more about the cycle safety training online by emailing merseysideoffice@bikeright.co.uk or by calling 0151 207 3140.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “Cycle to School Week is a fantastic opportunity for families across Knowsley to give cycling a try and experience the many benefits it can bring. Cycling, scooting or walking, to school is a great way for children to stay active, build confidence and develop healthy habits, while also helping to reduce traffic and improve air quality around our schools.

“We would encourage parents, carers and pupils to take part, even if it’s just for one day. Whether you cycle, scoot or walk the whole journey or part of the way, every mile makes a difference.”
