A major improvement scheme is taking place at Tarbock Island at Junction 6 of the M62. This work is part of a significant investment programme to improve the flow of traffic and journey times at this busy junction that forms a key part of the Liverpool City region’s road infrastructure network.
The work will create additional capacity and reduce journey times by increasing the number of lanes on the approaches to the roundabout, as well as widening the roundabout. The programme of works also supports the wider developments in the area which in turn are bringing around 2,000 jobs to the borough.
All possible steps are being taken to minimise disruption but there will be some unavoidable delays to journeys. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, or choose alternative routes where possible.
Current works:
Until January 2027: M57 southbound exit slip will be completely closed (coming on to Tarbock Island from the direction of Prescot/Kirkby) The slip road will be closed in order to manage congestion on Tarbock Island while works are carried out on the west side of the roundabout. The associated diversion involves continuing along the M57 to the Knowsley Expressway (A5300) and coming back via Tarbock Island. The M57 Junction 1 Southbound exit.
Until January 2027: M62 Junction 6 eastbound exit slip will be completely closed (coming on to Tarbock Island from the direction of Liverpool). Diverted traffic will be directed to the M62 Junction 7 and return to Tarbock Island via the M62 Junction 7 westbound entry slip road and the M62 westbound carriageway.
Until 27 October 2026 the M57 Junction 1 northbound entry slip road (leaving Tarbock Island to join the M57 heading in the direction of Prescot/Aintree) will be closed 24/7 to facilitate road widening works. Traffic will be diverted via the A5300 Knowsley Expressway Southbound to the Newstead Farm Interchange, then be diverted back onto the A5300 Knowsley Expressway northbound carriageway.
Please note that dates may be subject to change and regular updates will be provided. The scheme comprises of further phases of work, and the final anticipated completion date is January 2027.
