A major improvement scheme is taking place at Tarbock Island at Junction 6 of the M62. This work is part of a significant investment programme to improve the flow of traffic and journey times at this busy junction that forms a key part of the Liverpool City region’s road infrastructure network.
The work will create additional capacity and reduce journey times by increasing the number of lanes on the approaches to the roundabout, as well as widening the roundabout. The programme of works also supports the wider developments in the area which in turn are bringing around 2,000 jobs to the borough.
All possible steps are being taken to minimise disruption but there will be some unavoidable delays to journeys. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, or choose alternative routes where possible.
Current works:
Until January 2027: M57 southbound exit slip will be completely closed (coming on to Tarbock Island from the direction of Prescot/Kirkby) The slip road will be closed in order to manage congestion on Tarbock Island while works are carried out on the west side of the roundabout. The associated diversion involves continuing along the M57 to the Knowsley Expressway (A5300) and coming back via Tarbock Island.
Until January 2027: M62 Junction 6 eastbound exit slip will be completely closed (coming on to Tarbock Island from the direction of Liverpool). Diverted traffic will be directed to the M62 Junction 7 and return to Tarbock Island via the M62 Junction 7 westbound entry slip road and the M62 westbound carriageway.
Until 13 November: Overnight closures on Tarbock Roundabout. The east side of Tarbock Island roundabout will be closed overnight from 21 October – 13 November between 8pm and 5am from final finishing works and carriageway resurfacing.
All lanes of the roundabout will be closed from Cronton Road’s eastbound approach to Tarbock Island (on the Aldi side of the junction) in a clockwise direction to just before the Knowsley Expressway(A5300) northbound exit slip road. Please note that the A5300 northbound exit slip road will remain open.
The following roads will be closed to facilitate the works:
- Cronton Road’s eastbound approach to Tarbock Island (western arm on the Aldi side of the junction)
- The M57 J1 northbound entry slip road & southbound exit slip road
- Windy Arbor Road
- The M62 J6 eastbound entry slip road
- The M62 J6 westbound exit slip road
- Cronton Road (eastern arm – Cronton side of the roundabout)
- A5300 Expressway southbound entry slip road
The M62 Junction 6 eastbound exit slip road (currently closed 24/7) will be opened at night time to assist traffic travelling along Cronton Road (in a westbound direction towards Huyton only).
For the duration of these works the east side of the roundabout will be reduced to a single lane during the daytime.
Please note that dates may be subject to change and regular updates will be provided. The scheme comprises of further phases of work, and the final anticipated completion date is January 2027.
