More than 11,000 revellers turned out to see Prescot switch on the town’s biggest and best ever Christmas lights.
The grand switch-on event took place on Saturday, 16 November with loads of free festive entertainment including live music from The Jerseys, performances by local artists and street performers.
Many of the town’s local businesses set up stalls in the streets to selling delicious food, drink and goods, and community organisations were also there joining in the fun.
The event was topped off with a stunning fireworks display to really welcome in the festive period with a bang.
With the usual footfall for a typical Saturday in Prescot being around 4,600 people, to attract more than 11,000 people to the event was great news for local traders. It was also a significant increase in the numbers who have typically attended Prescot’s Christmas events in previous years – in fact it was almost twice as many who attended last year.
A stunning and tasteful Christmas lighting display to complement the town’s rich history
A swathe of new lighting has been installed to celebrate the end of an incredible year for Prescot.
Thanks to investment by Knowsley Council, the town’s Christmas lights have been extended from Eccleston Street down the side streets of Leyland Street, Atherton Street and Chapel Street giving a stunning effect and allowing even more businesses to benefit from the decorations.
A huge 25 foot Christmas tree sits proudly outside St Mary’s Church whilst a bespoke illuminated sign reads: “Welcome wanderer” – part of a famous line from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
These plans were spurred on by the collaborative spirit of the town’s traders, who have been working together in partnership with Knowsley Council on initiatives which enhance the town and benefit their businesses collectively. This positive approach saw The Prescot Business Club, made up of representatives from the various businesses in the town, successfully win £10,000 of lighting for the town centre in a competition earlier this year. The prize not only included money to put towards lighting but also a live performance by the band The Jersey’s at the switch-on event.
The new lighting in Prescot has been chosen by Prescot Business Club in conjunction with the council. It was agreed that the scheme should be sensitive to the town’s historic town centre and make reference to its links with Shakespeare and the Playhouse which is currently being constructed.
The end result is that this year’s Prescot Christmas lights are truly the biggest and best ever.
Who has funded Christmas in Prescot?
Bringing Christmas to Prescot has been a joint effort between local businesses and Knowsley Council.
The £10,000 contribution from the Prescot Business Club has enabled the council to enhance the lighting display significantly into other parts of the town centre rather than just Eccleston Street. To support this, Knowsley Borough Council has invested further significant funding to upgrade infrastructure to be used year after year in the town, host the switch-on event and provide the tree and other lighting.
In addition, several local businesses have been keen to contribute towards the costs and have become sponsors – the council is very grateful to Morecrofts Solicitors, Tarmac and Huyton Asphalt, who have all become sponsors.
